Mengasah Pemahaman Idiom: Ekspresi Berguna untuk Sehari-hari


Halo, para pembaca setia blog giri-widodo! Kita kembali dengan serangkaian idiom baru yang pastinya akan memperkaya kosakata dan kemampuan komunikasimu sehari-hari. Yuk, simak beberapa ungkapan populer berikut dan cara penggunaannya dalam percakapan sehari-hari.


1. To Point Out

Arti: Menunjukkan, mengindikasikan, atau memberi perhatian pada sesuatu (S).

Contoh:

  • What important buildings did the tour guide point out to you?

  • The teacher pointed out the mistakes in my composition.

  • A friend pointed the famous actor out to me.


2. To Be Up

Arti: Kadaluarsa atau selesai. Idiom ini hanya digunakan dengan kata "time" sebagai subjek.

Contoh:

  • "The time is up," the teacher said at the end of the test period.

  • We have to leave the tennis court because our hour is up; some other people want to use it now.


3. To Be Over

Arti: Selesai atau berakhir (juga: to be through). Idiom ini digunakan untuk kegiatan dan acara.

Contoh:

  • After the dance was over, we all went to a restaurant.

  • The meeting was through ten minutes earlier than everyone expected.


4. On Time

Arti: Tepat pada waktunya atau tepat waktu.

Contoh:

  • I thought that Margaret would arrive late, but she was right on time.

  • Did you get to work on time this morning, or did rush hour traffic delay you?


5. In Time To (do something)

Arti: Sebelum waktu yang diperlukan untuk melakukan sesuatu.

Contoh:

  • We entered the theater just in time to see the beginning of the movie.

  • The truck was not able to stop in time to prevent an accident.


6. To Get Better (Worse, etc.)

Arti: Menjadi lebih baik, lebih buruk, dll.

Contoh:

  • Heather has been sick for a month, but now she is getting better.

  • This medicine isn't helping me. Instead of getting better, I'm getting worse.


7. To Get Sick (Well, Tired, etc.)

Arti: Menjadi sakit, sehat, lelah, dll. Idiom ini terdiri dari kombinasi get dan berbagai kata sifat.

Contoh:

  • Gerald got sick last week and has been in bed since that time.

  • Every afternoon I get very hungry, so I eat a snack.


8. Had Better (do something)

Arti: Seharusnya atau sebaiknya. Idiom ini sering digunakan dalam bentuk kontraksi (I'd better).

Contoh:

  • I think you'd better speak to Mr. White right away about this matter.

  • The doctor told the patient that he'd better go home and rest.


9. Would Rather (do something)

Arti: Lebih memilih untuk (juga: would just as soon (do something) as (do something else)).

Contoh:

  • Would you rather have the appointment this Friday or next Monday?

  • I would just as soon go for a walk as watch TV right now.


10. To Call It a Day/Night

Arti: Menghentikan pekerjaan untuk sisa hari/malam.

Contoh:

  • Herb tried to repair his car engine all morning before he called it a day and went fishing.

  • We've been working hard on this project all evening; let's call it a night.


11. To Figure Out

Arti: Menyelesaikan atau menemukan solusi (S); memahami (S).

Contoh:

  • How long did it take you to figure out the answer to the math problem?

  • I was never able to figure it out.


12. To Think Of

Arti: Mempunyai (pendapat baik atau buruk) tentang sesuatu. Idiom ini sering digunakan dalam bentuk negatif atau dengan kata sifat seperti "much" dan "highly."

Contoh:

  • I don't think much of him as a baseball player; he's a slow runner and a poor hitter.

  • James thinks highly of his new boss, who is a kind and helpful person.
